Sixty Years Ago

My parents on their wedding day.
November 24, 1950
First Methodist Church   ~   Canadian, Texas

It wasn't so much about a big fluffy white dress in those days!

I do have the necklace and earrings Mother wore that day.
I now sometimes wear her necklace.  It is actually quite similar to ones currently found in popular and trendy stores.  Funny how that happens.
I discovered the beading from her dress, tucked away in one of her dresser drawers.  I recognized it immediately.
She gave me her wedding band shortly before she passed away.  I always wear it on the same finger as my own wedding band.

Growing up, I sometimes felt badly their special day seemed lost in the celebration of Thanksgiving and the beginning of the busy holiday season.
Now, I am so often reminded of my parents, their marriage, our family, my wonderful childhood and their unconditional love at this special time.  Exactly when we should be counting our blessings.
They gave me much.
They taught me well, by word and example.
I am so very thankful.
I miss them more than words can express.
Happy Anniversary, Mother and Daddy!

Jan, my parents were also married 60 years ago on Thanksgiving Day. (The day before your parents, Nov. 23.) My mom also didn't wear a gown, but instead, a green suit. My brother and his daughter both ended up being born on Nov. 23, so there are many extra thoughts of Thanksgiving at this time of year for our family as well. Thank YOU for reminding us of so many blessings throughout the years.

Oh, I forgot to say that they were married at First Methodiast Church in Fredonia, KS. It is amazing how closely our lives sometimes follow a parallel path. I'm so glad our paths finally came together!

Oh Jan, what a lovely tribute to your parents! They certainly DID teach you well!

Your mother's jewelry is beautiful. Be sure to pass those special tidbits of information on to your sons so that they know the significance of each piece. I'm trying to write little notes & tuck them inside each antique that I own, just in case God doesn't give me time to explain to my DD & DGD their history.

Have a wonderfully blessed Thanksgiving!

Love the photo and the story, Jan. I love looking at the photos of old weddings. My mom did have the white dress, to go with Dad's dress whites, since he was in the Navy. But it's nice to see that even back then, it wasn't all about white :-) Amazing how fashion trends return....

How wonderful you still have your Mother's jewelry. If your parents were like mine, they didn't have two nickels to rub together much less money to spend on a fancy dress. My Mom's was a silky(probably rayon) blue church dress that she kept for many years. Unfortunately, there were no pictures taken at the wedding.

Jan, this is such a lovely post and a beautiful tribute to your parents. Happy Anniversary to them. Today is my Grandma's birthday. She's been gone a long time, but we shared November birthdays.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ahhh....how very sweet...and what a lovely couple they were too... My Mum wore and ermine collar on the day she married my dad.... She gave it to me years ago.....along with her wedding band. Her hands were much smaller than mine, so I can't wear her ring on my finger, but darned if I didn't fit that little thing on my toe! I think it would make her laugh....

Have a wonderful thanksgiving....

Warm blessings,
Spencer

I don't know if I ever knew their anniversary was close to Thanksgiving. I know my mom and dad's was on Nov 22nd and that was also the anniversary of JFK's assassination!

Mary, your parents' wedding was two days before Mother's and Daddy's 25th anniversary. At the reception, your mother and I presented them with a miniature wedding cake and silver tray. There should be photographs of it in your mother's wedding album. They were so surprised that we remembered it was their Silver Anniversary!
