A Golden Night

Did your favorites win?
Mine did!
Sandra Bullock, Best Actress, for her portrayal of  Leigh Ann Tuohy in

The Blind Side.
There were many nominees worthy of winning.  Many films with worthy messages.  But, my fingers were really crossed for Sandra.  How ironic that only 24 hours earlier, she was awarded a Razzie for her performance in All About Steve.  She was just as gracious in accepting criticism for her work, as she was in accepting accolades and her shiny Academy Award.  A lesson there for all of us.
And didn't it warm your heart to hear so many winners thanking their parents --whether they were in the audience, watching from home or watching from above?

There is probably another reason why I was pulling for Sandra and The Blind Side.

The movie is based on the true story of the Tuohy family who opens their home and their hearts to a  homeless boy.  Their lives and that of the boy, Michael Oher, are forever changed.

While not filmed in Memphis, the real story did unfold in this city on the Mississippi River.  A city with which I am very familiar.  You see, my husband was born and raised there.  It is a place where we still gather with family and friends.  A place that I have come to love more than I ever expected.
Lately, Memphis has received some very bad press.
True, there have been, are and may continue to be problems.
That is true of other large, and even some small, cities.
Yet, there was one family who was willing to reach out and touch one life.
It is the people of Memphis -- and not just those related to me -- that I love.
What would happen if we all reached out and touched one less fortunate life?

I loved it. I loved that she won, I loved her dress and I LOVED her acceptance speech. And none of that comes close to how much I loved the movie.

Hi Jan, Just found your blog through A little loveliness. I am Dutch living in The Netherlands and I love sewing and needlework, so I admire your work on the bonnet. Last night I saw the movie with Sandra Bullock: great, great. So good from a honoust Christian vieuw, so simple to help and so hard to surrender to help. She deserves the Oscar for sure ...no nonsense mother ! I thought Michael a good actor too though and the little boy splendid.
